Hiring? It is a 50/50 Chance
Hiring is very expensive process, both in terms of advertising and time
committed to interview and train.
Several years back, the Human Resource Director at the U of M said this
about the success rate of good hires: "A good hire is defined as
someone who capably performs the job duties and is still employed one
year later. Even after all the testing U of M does for skills, knowledge,
personality, psychological and multiple interviews, we only have a 50%
success rate of good hires."
It was surprising, and somewhat comforting, knowing U of M had no better
luck than I did, even after their intensive effort put into the hiring
process. In addition to the checking of references and verification of
employment history, (neither usually revealing much) there are other tools
available that will give you insight into the most important element in
a prospective employee's evaluation; their character. Character, the most
important and most overlooked personality trait in hiring, is something
very hard to judge during an interview.
First, check the applicant's credit history, once they become a viable
candidate, and eliminate most of the guesswork. Commitments honored, whether
personal or financial, speak volumes about one's character. Second, you
can do a criminal record check as well. In both cases, you need to obtain
the candidate's consent, as well as comply with laws protecting the applicant's
rights. Our company provides both services.
For help in accessing these two critical pieces of data and negotiating
the compliance issues, contact Linda Underwood at our office, 734-665-3611.
Protect your company; protect your staff and your bottom line by hiring
people with good character. It could be the best hire you never made.
