May 2000 NewsletterThe World's Second Oldest Profession? The world's oldest profession is one of dubious distinction and illegal in forty-nine states. What would you guess is the world's second oldest? But let's move on to a timelier topic: the economy. President Clinton expressed concern over the meteoric rise of consumer debt to a record high of 6.3 trillion dollars. That is up nearly 50% in the last five years. Record high employment has no doubt spurred consumer debt, and the recent increased bankruptcy trend has prompted Congress to pass bankruptcy reform. These two examples barely scratch the surface of how multifarious the issue ofeconomic strength is. To further perplex the economic picture, collection agencies will try to collect $135 billion for creditors who can't convince their debtors to pay without professional intervention. That is good news for our business, but why inthe world with everyone working is there so many debts that go unpaid? We could query the scholars about it, but even with the immeasurable knowledge they possess, the greatest minds of economics are right only half the time. I don't know about you, but that doesn't give me a secure feeling on how much any one of them really can claim they know of the hyper-complexity of economics. Including Alan Greenspan. Now here is what I do know, as long as goods or services are rendered with expectation of being paid later, some people can't, don't or won't pay, in spite of a strong economy. There will always be bad debt and a need for professional debt collectors. Thank the Lord for that. Now, back to the original conundrum of the world's second oldest profession. For those of you that think you know the answer, the prize is two front row box seat tickets to see the Tigers at the new Comerica Park. Send your answers to me at rjbaacb@aol.com or fax to 734-663-5794. Entry deadline is May 15, 2000. Bob Barden Michigan Dental Association
What do you get when you put over 5,000 dentists and staff together with
a 100,000 square foot convention center? What a fun weekend we had Thursday, April 13, 2000 through Saturday, April 15, 2000. Several members of our Credit Bureau, Inc. sales staff and managers enjoyed a weekend indoors at the convention, bringing our quality products and services directly to the Michigan dental industry. We would like to offer a warm thank you to all our clients who stopped by our booth to say "hello" and investigate some of our new products. If you visited, you witnessed the sparkling Harley Davidson motorcycle that graced our booth. Hopefully you entered your name in the drawing for one of three prizes: * A $100.00 gift certificate to a Harley Davidson store THE WINNER WAS DAVID H. SWAIN, DDS OF GRAND HAVEN! We take great pride in being available to answer any inquires and meet the Michigan dentists and staff. In addition, as technology leaders, the convention assists us in staying at the top of dental offices' accounts receivable needs by allowing us to share our latest advancements in products and services. If you didn't have a chance to visit, and your curiosity about our new services is getting the best of you, give us a call to discuss some new options in the money collection game. Time's Up!Andy Warhol once said "everyone gets their 15 minutes of fame in their lifetime" - it seems mine has come and was shorter and less glamorous than I thought it would be! In my younger years when dreams of Hollywood and the "stars" were very constant due to being young and attempting to set my sights on the skies, I wished for much bigger results. Now as a mother of 3 living in York Township, Michigan, I have come to realize that the big moments in life are so much simpler than being famous. It's the smile of a child's new discovery or the belly laughter of your entire family on a Sunday afternoon. And so, to my enjoyment, another simple thing occurred due to my job at the Credit Bureau. I provided a presentation to the York Township Board about our collection services. Of course they would have to meet and advise me of their intent-a normal day in the life of a salesman-oops-saleswoman! Where does the enjoyment come in? Well of course, just doing my job is great (that was for the boss), but when I read the Milan paper and meandered down to the "Synopsis of the Charter Township of York Regular Board Meeting" and scanned the new business section I discovered I had made the paper!!!!!!! OK it wasn't much, "presentation from Ann Arbor Credit Bureau representative relating to delinquent fire bill collection," but it made my day. Yes my life is simple. And I got some free advertising for my company-if anyone could find it. So I proceeded to cut it out of the paper, much to the amusement of my 14 year old, who is always in the paper because of her many talents in sports and school. She couldn't believe that I would cut it out. "It doesn't even have your name," shebantered. "That's true," I stated but what if this was my only moment of fame and I had no record of it-(here comes the parent talking) you will find it is the little things in life that make you happy" - and it made my day! Why the story? Oh, sometimes it's nice to let our clients know that it is the little things that they do that make our jobs and life more enjoyable-a thank you card, notes like "you guys are doing a good job," passing on our name to other businesses. Tom even had a client send him a coffee mug. Again it's the little things. You see, we know our business has a negative connotation, but we think it is a valuable service. Helping people to become debt free is a great privilege because as we all know it isn't any fun to owe someone. Therefore, thanks to all of you, and we hope that we provide you with some little, simple things that make your day a little easier. And, if we add a smile to your face, we have succeeded in one of our goals for the day-to make your life slightly smoother, and Lord knows we all need that! Tina Walther |
